“Coding is challenging but worth the effort. It helped me use my math skills, learn robotics with Edison, learn Scratch, create 3D images into models, make stars with the Turtle program, and now, I am going to learn the Python program. I’m looking forward to going to STEM class again to see what I’m going to learn. ”

Empowering Youth Through Culture and Coding

The First Nations Family STEM program is offered by Nanan STEM Academy, a Youth+Us community partner. The Nanan Academy offers a range of courses from basic computer coding to advanced robotics, allowing students to explore their interests while developing technical skills. Students come away with plenty of soft skills as well, including critical thinking, collaboration, leadership and cultural competence. Treyton, a sixth-grader from Regina, found himself thriving in the program, thanks to a supportive and creative environment. Treyton has always been a creative at heart and he keeps busy with a variety of creative hobbies and interests.

I love to sketch and paint. I just recently started to read Mangas so I have been visiting the library a lot. I love spending time with my sisters and going for walks. I really
enjoy playing games on my Xbox and learning new ideas for new games. I’m looking forward to starting my swimming class again and of course, STEM class.

Nurturing youth skills and creativity

Since joining the Nanan STEM Academy, Treyton quickly became proficient in Scratch, and even designed a game called “Banana Maze Complex,” where players navigate mazes collecting bananas. Treyton’s face lights up when he talks about his projects, the food after class, and the trips to the Science Center. His favorite memory is presenting his “Banana Maze Complex” game during the showcase event, a moment that marked his first experience presenting publicly.

Treyton has completed an impressive 110 projects, each one a testament to his growing skills and creativity.
