The Specialist, Railcar Maintenance oversees all mechanical aspects of KSPC’s covered hopper railcar fleet, ensuring the highest safety and operational standards are met. This role collaborates closely with the Logistics & Transportation department, Operations and both onsite and offsite railcar repair facilities to manage business needs and optimize repair and regulatory requirements. The Specialist, Railcar Maintenance ensures the fleet’s safety, compliance and availability to execute on our logistics and transportation strategy.
Maintenance of K+S current railcar fleet - 60%:
Ensures maintenance standards are met through regular quality assurance audits and compliance checks
Reviews and authorizes invoices for payment to external service partners, ensuring accuracy and compliance with contractual agreements
Coordinates maintenance activities with 3rd party shops, on-site repair facilities and mobile repair services
Quality assurance of railcars and equipment (auditing) meeting Association of American Railroads (AAR) standards
Orchestrates rail repairs and maintenance by collaborating with rail operations, fleet management services, customers, and rail carriers
Develops maintenance strategies that meet regulatory requirements and align with operational plans
Maintains systems used for tracking and reporting
Assists with rail fleet planning and strategy as needed
Develops strategy for railcar fleet area - 40%:
Develops sustainable maintenance repair strategy and development of annual budgets
Assists in developing scope of work related to new car builds as needed
Responsible for mechanical data completion in various databases, such as SAP
Subject matter expert of the KSPC railcar portfolio, providing expertise to various stakeholders with strong, verbal, written and analytical skills
Engages in the long-term vision within the railcar fleet area and the broader Logistics & Transportation team
Provides leadership within responsibilities and applies a continuous improvement mindset to future-looking strategy
Conducts ad-hoc analysis including comparative analysis, responding to various inquiries from multiple teams, using multiple data sources
Manages and assists with various reporting including cost analysis, cycle time shop performance, mechanical trend analysis
Manages and assists with various projects related to medium and long-term logistics strategies
Maintains strong relationships with stakeholders, including railways and service providers, to resolve issues and drive continuous improvement
Reports monthly costs, compare actuals to budget, and assess forecast expectations
YOU

2 year diploma, preferably in program specialization of logistics/supply chain management, transportation management, or business administration
Minimum of 8 years of experience in rail, fleet management or a technical capacity
Existing knowledge of covered hopper car regulations
Previous railcar maintenance knowledge is a pre-requisite
Standards compliance and rail car regulatory framework knowledge will be considered an asset
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Analytical skills, with strength in excel (pivot tables, graphs, charts) and data management
SAP experience preferred
